My Mom, Wendy

A little respect goes a long way.

My mom, Wendy Bissett, was born in Calgary. She also grew up in Calgary. She is the youngest out of six children and her parents are retired. Her family is very close and all but one lives in, or close to, Calgary. In school, Wendy’s favourite subjects were math, L.A. and science. When she grew up, my mom wanted to be a nurse, a teacher, or a photographer. When she was really young, she wanted to be a naturalist, but of course, she’s a nurse now.

My mom’s been working at the Children’s Hospital for 20 years. The first 3 years Wendy looked after kids with cystic fibrosis and for the last 17 years she has looked after kids in the Intensive Care Unit. It can be hard or even very stressful to be a nurse in I.C.U. because they sometimes have to help parents get over losing a child. There are so many reasons it is stressful, but that is an important one. My mom also says that kids can get sicker very fast, so you need to keep a close watch on them in the I.C.U., which makes it stressful too. There is also an exciting side to having this job because she is on the Transport Team and so she gets to ride in planes or even in a helicopter with S.T.A.R.S. to go pick up kids from somewhere else and bring them back to Calgary.

To me a hero is someone who cares about the world around them and the people in it. They also help people and put extra effort into what they do. When my mom was growing up her biggest hero was her oldest brother because he worked hard and he achieved his goals. Two of the major beliefs my mom went by were, “Treat others how you would like to be treated," and “A little respect goes a long way.” Two lessons I have learned from my mom are to stand up for what you believe in and to treat others with respect. Another value I’ve learned from watching how my mom lives her life is how important it is to laugh. When my mom was growing up she received awards such as outstanding student, athlete awards, and was class valedictorian. Class valedictorian is someone who gives a speech at their graduation ceremony.

I have a few reasons why I chose my mom for my hero. My first reason is my mom is an amazing person because what she does at work is incredible and I couldn’t do it for sure. My mom also has an amazing attitude even when she goes to work at night. I have learned that trust and honesty are the hardest to replace. I think that my mom really inspires us all to do better and to go for our goals. I look up to my mom and to me she is a real hero.
