Whoopi Goldberg was born in Manhattan N.Y and in 1955 at 12:48pm as Caryn Elaine Johnson. She stared performing at age 8 in New York, City. Her mother raised her and her brother by herself because her dad was a preacher. Her father left his family.

At age 14 she dropped out of school. Then she lied about her age to get work as a summer camp counselor, and singing in courses of the Broadway shows Hair, Jesus Christ, Superstar, and Pippin.

After surviving an experience with drugs addiction, she got married at age 18 and had a kid named Alexandrea. Her and her husband split up, and Whoopi with her daughter moved to California in 1974. The following year she helped find the San Diego Repertory Theater and joined the Spontaneous Combustion. It was at this time that Caryn Johnson adopted her distinctive stage name, Whoopi Goldberg, and began to develop the character that was to make her famous. After moving to San Fransisco Bay, she joined another comedian. Soon she was touring the U.S. and the Europe with her womens production, The Spook Show.

In 1983, Whoopi Goldberg brought The Spook Show to New York’s Dance Theater Workshop, Where it attracted immediate critical attention.
