Wright Brothers

by Kyunghyo from Nanjing

“The airplane stays up because it doesn't have the time to fall.”

When the Wright brothers were young their father bought a propeller for their toy airplane because when they played with the propeller it broke. They fixed the propeller on to the airplane and this was the beginning of their interest in building airplanes.

The big brother Wilbur was born on a farm Near Milville in Indiana, on August 19th 1867. The family moved to Dayton and little brother Orville was born on 19th 1871 at 7 Hawthorn Street.

When they were 12 years they dreamed that they wanted to be as clever as Edison, a great inventor. The brothers built a bicycle work shop and this is how they learned to make things. When they were young the propeller of their plane was broken and they fixed the airplane and it looked like a bat so they called it Bat 1, Bat 2 and Bat 3. But when they grew up they made Flyer 1, Flyer 2 and Flyer 3.

In September 1900 the brothers travelled by train, ferry and boat to Kitty Hawk to test their glider. But one day the wind didn’t blow so they returned to Dayton.

Big brother Wilbur was dead on 1912. Little brother Orville was dead on 1948.
