Yogi Berra

by Matthew from New Haven

There are many attributes that make up what I call, a "hero." Whether it be a skill in what they do or an inspirational attitude. The reason why they are given a legendary name like "hero" is that they motivate the average Joe to do what he/she only dreamed of. Everyone needs a hero, whether it be a big brother, a best friend or an athlete on your favorite sports team, just so they get that extra inch of motivation, which in the end, leads to miles of accomplishment.

Yogie Berra was a man that deserves the title of a hero both on and off the field. He was born May 12, 1925, in St. Lousi Missouri. Throughout his baseball career, he was elected MVP 3 times, and appreaed in 14 World Series. As a Baseball manager, he is one of six people ever to lead teams from both the American and National League to the World Series. He also was placed number 40 on "The Sporting News" list of the 100 greatest baseball players ever.

Off the field, Yogi Berra was always an inspiration. In 1998, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center and the Yogi Berra Satdium (Home to the New Jersy Jackels) opened up the campus of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair. Berra was involved with many projects, and frequent museum signings, discussions, and other events. It was his intention to teach children important values such as sportsmanship and dedication, both on and off the baseball diamond.
