| Bethany Trying To Surf Again... |
Ordinary Person:
Bethany Hamilton was born to an ordinary family. Her entire family loves to surf. She knew how to surf along with her family at the age of 5. Bethany and her family won’t let anyone or anything get in the way of what they love: surfing. She would get all worried if she missed one day of surfing because she would think she’s not good enough. She was raised in one of the best places to surf: Hawaii. Bethany really loves living in Hawaii because they have one of the best waves to surf in.
Extraordinary Circumstances:
Bethany lost her arm around the age of 14. One day when she was surfing, a very furious shark came right at her and bit off her left arm. If she wasn't rushed to the hospital with her friend and her friend’s dad she could have died. There was a 70% chance for her to die and 30% chance that she wouldn’t. Bethany tells us "I knew this would happen but it happened too fast". Bethany did a lot of surgery on her arm so she had to stay at the hospital for about 6 days.
Odds Stacked Against Her:
Bethany lost her arm around 14 she tries to surf safely again but she is scared that it will happen again. Bethany tells us that “I was shocked when the doctors told me that I could have died, imagine losing 70% of your blood". Bethany wasn’t too worried about dying she only was worried about never surfing again. Bethany suffered a lot but she stayed strong. One thing she kept thinking about was how soon she could surf again.
Accomplishments:
Two years past and Bethany was kicking the waves again Bethany got so excited that she could surf again. Bethany is becoming a champion and proving that she is the best of all surfers out there. She is succeeding and winning to prove that she is back. Bethany is also surfing without getting any injuries. Even with a loss of an arm Bethany still finds a way to achieve what she loves to do. Just like a normal person. Therefore, Bethany is a strong and an inspiring Hero.
