Billy Idol, while at first glance looks like a drugged-up 80's punk rocker, is really an epic guitarist. Starting at about the age of 16, he learned guitar by himself in a garage. With ambitions and goals, he released himself to the world, writing riffs with awesome beats and never-ending skill. The most unique thing about him is that he never learned the scales which are generally used in writing lead guitar riffs.

Billy Idol was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, England on November 30, 1955. He became an English Literature Scholar at Sussex University. He was always fascinated with the Sex Pistols, an 80's punk band. This inspired him to move on to greater things.

In 1976 Billy formed his first band named Chelsea. The band however didn't last long. He later founded the band Generation X which lasted about 5 years. This gave Billy Idol a chance to launch his solo career in New York. He recorded several songs, including "Don't Stop", a revival of the classic UK smash hit "Mony Mony." His career began to take off in 1982. Billy's explosive act and acoustic vocal style helped launch several hits, including "White Wedding" (number 6 on the UK charts). He became an "idol" just as his name stated.

Although Billy is a rocker, he has also appeared in many charity shows, including Neil Young's Bridge School benefit concert. The story of Billy Idol almost ended in 1990 in a motorcycle crash which devoured his leg, but he somehow recovered. He continues to be well-known and successful. Another incident threatened his career in 1992 when he was charged with assaulting a fan. However this only fueled his image as a rebel, helping him become yet even more successful.

Billy may not look like it, but he is an inspirational person. He's a very successful musician and has two children, a son Wilhem and a daughter Bonnie Blue. He has inspired and driven me as both a musician and a person to succeed and I hope he can do the same for you.
