Childhood (http://www.stareastnet.com/) |
Jackie Chan isn’t an average man. Even his childhood wasn’t average. Jackie Chan spent twelve months instead of nine months in his mother’s stomach. This caused his mother to receive a C-Section to get Jackie out. When Jackie Chan was born on April 7th 1954, he was twelve pounds. That’s twice as heavy as a normal baby! The intensive surgery caused Jackie’s family to be in a poor economic situation. Jackie’s family almost had to sell the baby in order to pay the hospital. But right at the last second, all of his friends and other families kindly paid the hospital.
Sadly, Jackie’s family was still very poor, causing Jackie to grow up in a bad environment. In 1960, his family moved to Australia. Jackie took school there but did so bad in school, that Jackie never really passed the first grade. After a year or so in Australia, his family sent him back to Hong Kong so he could join the Peking Opera School. During his time at the opera school, he learned his martial arts, singing, dancing and his acting. He stayed there until the age of 17. He later left the school to start a new adventure on his own.

Since Jackie learned how to act, he needed to use it. He started getting small roles with Bruce Lee in “Enter the Dragon”. After he got used to the camera, he began getting larger roles in movies. After Bruce Lee’s death, people wanted him to be the new Bruce. Jackie refused this offer because Jackie wanted to develop his own unique style of martial arts while still inspiring audiences the same way Bruce did.

After Jackie’s success in “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow”, more people wanted to see him on the big screen. And that’s just what he did. He made a movie called “The Drunken Master” which was another great hit. With success with this movie, Jackie wanted to go Hollywood. Jackie tried many times to get into Hollywood but failed. But then 1995, Jackie’s “Rumble in the Bronx” was released. His successful hit made many viewers want more of his films! Also, viewers couldn’t believe that Jackie did his own stunts. He does his own stunts because he says that he doesn’t want to cheat his audiences and he wants to make everything as real as possible. Jackie’s stunts left him with painful injuries and even left him in the hospital. But whatever stunts he plans to do, he’ll do it for the camera. One of his stunts actually blasted a hole through his skull which almost claimed his life! But Jackie didn’t care; he’ll still do stunts that are jaw dropping, eye-popping and wildly funny.
Jackie isn’t just any stuntman though; he also organized the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in China, which eventually made its way into Japan. This foundation helps the needy, the poor, the elderly, and the disabled. He also has many other foundations including Self-Help for the Elderly, which raised over $300,000 for the old; Jackie Chan Sends Warmth Movement, which helps the homeless; and the Jackie Chan youth centre in Hong Kong.
Jackie has done a number of good things for the world. But some people doubt him. They take one look at him and say “All he does is work out and jump off buildings!” But if you learn more about him and learn what he does, you'll see he is a hero.
