Courageous Bethany Hamilton

Bethany Hamilton portraitHannaBethany was born February 8th 1990, at Lihue, Hawaii, United States and was raised in a surfing family. And has two brothers, Timothy and Noah and her parents are Thomas and Cherilyn Hamilton. And she got married to Adam Dirks in August 8th 2013, and has one son name Tobias. Bethany Hamilton was home-schooled in middle School because she wanted to spend more time surfing. But she decided go back to school in high school. Bethany Hamilton was most interested in surfing and is a great surfer and so was her best friend Alana. Bethany's childhood was amazing, living by the beaches surfing in the calm waves until she was 13. Bethany was surfing like any other times she was surfing, with her friend Alana, Alana´s father and Alana's brother Byron. And suddenly, a 14-foot-long shark bit Bethany's left arm which was dangling in the water and cut her arm off right to her shoulder. But luckily, she survived and had a successful surgery. But she couldn't surf anymore and was depressed. Bethany did not give up and her family encouraged her to not to give up. Bethany won 2nd place in Hawaii's Local Motion/Ezekiel Surf. Even when Bethany was little she would always hang out in the water with her best friend Alana and her mom used to call them ¨mermaids¨ and they both wanted to be a surfing champion. Even though Bethany was growing up her dream didn't change, she still wanted to be a surfer. And Bethany knew if she tried, she would be the best surfer in Hawaii, or maybe USA.                

Bethany went through a lot of challenges like losing her left arm, not being able to surf for a while and news broadcasters following her. But Bethany did not let those things hold her back. Her family, friends, and people around her all encouraged her. Especially her brothers. Bethany´s family was worried about her surfing after her shark attack  but on the other side, they encouraged Bethany. 1 month after her shark attack, she started surfing with her family and they all helped her and gave her tips. Her family was amazed by Bethany´s courage. Even though Bethany lost her arm, she never thought of giving up surfing.

I feel sad that Bethany lost her arm, but it is amazing that she gets back up again in the wave to surf. And I want to ask Bethany these questions, ¨Were you afraid to surf again after the shark attack?¨, ¨Do you like being well known to people?¨ and ¨Do you ever want to stop surfing?¨ I want to really meet Bethany and ask all those questions. I learned lots about Bethany Hamilton and again, she is amazing. And I would kind of want to be Bethany's child because  I can learn all about surfing and that would be awesome! I also learned a very important lesson that you should never give up because you don't know what is going to happen next. I will try not to give up easily because I sometimes give up easily even though I could give it a another shot. I am very proud that Bethany Hamilton is my hero because she is so inspirational. I personally think Bethany Hamilton is everybody's hero. Bethany is also my role model because she teaches people to be kind, trying your best and being courageous. Bethany Hamilton is the best inspiring hero to me!
