Desmond Doss
By Mark K
When you think of a hero who do you think of? I think Desmond Doss’s story should be told. His childhood story defines who he becomes, and his accomplishments are worth telling. He is a hero because he is bold and is a risk taker, and if you read this you will find out.
Desmond’s story begins when he is a child. He was born on February 6th, 1919. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. His mother taught him the bible, and one day his father and his uncle were fighting. His dad pointed a gun to his uncle and his mother said to Desmond to hide the gun. After that Desmond never held a gun. The poster of the Ten Commandments, the one not to kill, had the most impact on Desmond. After he grew up, he had to join the army in WWll. A lot of people at training camp bullied him because he did not shoot a gun,so people did not want him in the army. He barely survived training camp, so he served as a medic. He proved his skills by dragging people out of the war. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star medal. But what everyone remembered about Desmond at Hacksaw Ridge was on that day he saved 75 men even after he got shot by a sniper and stepped on a grenade (he survived). And on that day he was fighting he only had a bible and faith.
public domainIn conclusion, he was the 1st medic to get the Medal of Honor. This is why I call him a hero as he always did his best to save lives. That was Desmond Doss’s story, childhood, and accomplishments.
