Screams came from far out into the towering waves. That was the daily lifestyle for the surfer and lifeguard, Eddie Aikau. During the early to mid-70s, Eddie traveled to South Africa, South America, and Australia to participate in a few early-era pro surfing events. Two traits every hero must have is courage and determination. Having the trait of courage means to not be deterred by danger or pain, in other words brave. Determination means having made a firm decision and being resolved not to change it. Eddie Aikau, the legendary lifeguard and surfer, is both courageous and determined which makes him a hero.

Eddie displayed his courage most when he got a certain saying and it caught on, “The local saying, “Eddie would go”, refers to his stoke to take on big waves the other surfers would shy away from and his courage to make a rescue in impossible situations” (Eddie Foundation 1). Eddie was a hero because he persevered through the big waves when nobody else did. He tackled challenges head on while others ran away. His courage was reliable and he was very trusted and looked up to. He never once hesitated, no matter how big the wave. Eddie was always thrilled to help out and was always prepared for the adrenaline rush. Since Eddie never reluctant to dive in the water and keep everyone safe. “Not one life was lost while he served as lifeguard at Waimea Bay” (Eddie Foundation 3). His courage and jumping to help as soon and as fast as he could got him to be able to not lose anyone. He was never worried about dying,he was only ever focused on the other person and their safety. That got him to save every he could during his time being a lifeguard.

Eddie Aikau risked his own life all the time to save strangers. He also never failed to jump right away when someone was in trouble. Eddie is a determined, strong-willed lifeguard. Another way he established his determination was, “In 1967, Eddie cracked a giant swell at Waimea Bay and made his mark in the world of big wave riding” (Surfer Today). This quote shows how he was determined and went through with his dreams and made them come true. He fought for his passions and got known for doing what he loved.

Therefore, the courageousness and determination that Eddie Aikau possessed made him a great hero and he saved so many lives. He mainly showed courage when he never hesitated to save people, and he represented his determination when he surfed and fought for his dreams; eventually becoming well known. Eddie inspires everyone around him by always being the best surfer, lifeguard, and person he could be. He saved lives and chased after his dreams which inspired many. Be brave, set goals, and inspire others.
