Mr. David Virgoe

by Gabe from Innisfil

A hero who gave his life to save others. . .

My hero is David Virgoe. He was a truck driver. He has driven trucks since he was 16 years old. He was killed in an auto accident on June 18, 2007. He was on Highway 400 in Ontario. He died a hero. Cars were street racing when David got cut off by them. Because of this accident, tougher laws are being passed.

David Virgoe is from Innisfil, Ontario. He was 48 years old, the same age as my dad. He died June 18, 2007. He had a wife and 3 children and 5 grandkids, who I know miss him very much. The papers say that he loved Nascar racing. He was killed the day after Father's Day. I feel bad for his family.

He saved so many lives that day. He swerved his tractor trailer truck and jackknifed, then flipped into a big ditch off the side of Highway 400. If he had not done what he did, he would have gone into oncoming traffic and a lot of people might have gotten hurt or even died. He gave his life so other people could live and not be hurt. Even now, he is saving people's lives. There are more laws about driving fast now because of David Virgoe and his wife Debbie Virgoe. The police have impounded more than 800 cars so far.

I feel better because there are fewer street racers and speeders on the roads. I feel David Virgoe was brave to go off the road to save people's lives. "I feel sad he died because he left his family and he was a good person," his wife said when the police gave her a posthumous bravery award for David's selfless and heroic act. She said, "If he was alive, he would be like a kid in a candy store. It makes me mad that people act so stupid on the roads."

My hero David Virgoe died to save lives. Because of him and his wife, a lot of people will be safer everyday on the roads. If I could, I would tell his family he is my hero. He will never know how much he has done for us. I can only say one thing, "Thank you David!"
