I chose Ian Millar because he has gone to ten summer Olympic games in show jumping, and I have a pony that I do show jumping with. Along with that I have always had the dream of becoming an Olympian in show jumping and winning a medal when I get older. He is 65 years old and is preparing for his next Olympics. When his horse Big Ben passed away he didn't know what to do next. That was until he found his next horse Star Power. As Big Ben is a legend and will always be missed, Star Power didn't waste any time starting to follow in his tracks.
Ian Millar was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1947. He is currently 65 years old. Ian has 2 children: Amy Millar and Jonathon Millar. Ian Millar started riding when he was ten years old. That's how old I am! His wife Lynn Millar passed away in March 2008. The cause was cancer. In 1995 Ian Millar suffered a severe injury including 5 broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder, and a collapsed lung. After only 2 months he was back at it! And even after all that, he still had an amazing Fall Circuit!
Ian Millar has had so many accomplishments that it is impossible to list them all. But some of his greatest accomplishments have been at The Olympics. He has won 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. He does English riding just like me! In English riding, he does both team jumping and individual jumping. He has also won six Derbys at Spruce Meadows and because of that, he got $2.2 million dollars in prize money! With his horse Big Ben, together they won the Show Jumping World Cup 2 years in a row. Along with that, he has been awarded the Order of Canada. He's pretty cool isn't he?!
For the most part, I just think that Ian Millar is a neat guy. He is really nice and caring, he is great at show jumping, he is an Olympic athlete and he does the same things with horses that I do. I think that he is a great influence on young riders, and I think that he is also very smart. He is a very kind man.
