My hero is Marc Garneau who is a Canadian Astronaut. He was born on February 23, 1949 in Quebec City. He went to school in London, Ontario and enjoyed learning about science. He joined the navy in 1968. Marc wanted to be in the military because his dad was in the military. In 1970 Marc graduated from the Royal Military College of Kingston with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and physics.
In 1983, Marc Garneau was one of six Canadians chosen to be the first Canadian astronauts and was the first Canadian in space when he flew as a payload specialist on the Challenger space shuttle in 1984. I think Marc Garneau is a hero because he was really brave to become an astronaut and travel into space. He went on three space missions and stayed in space for 29 days or 677 hours.
His character traits are: courage, co-operation (he had to learn to speak Russian because the other astronauts spoke Russians) and respect. He respected all his other fellow astronauts.
I am influenced by my hero to learn more about outer space and science. Marc Garneau worked hard at school to become an astronaut. Today Marc Garneau is a member of Parliament for the Liberal government in Quebec. He is a retired Canadian astronaut.
