Trevor Linden

by Brigit from Calgary

"It was difficult but I always said a lot of the difficult times are what shape you.
You grow from it and work through it." - Trevor Linden

I chose Trevor Linden because he has done a lot on and off the ice. In 1994 "Captain Canuck" Trevor Linden led the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. They were playing against the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden when they tragically lost 3-2.  He has also started the Trevor Linden 16 Foundation for people with special needs. Many other charities have been impacted by him like Cops for Cancer, Canuck Place Children's Hospice, Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon Preventative Health Campaign, Ronald Macdonald House BC, The Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC, and the BC Children's Hospital.

Trevor John Linden was born April 11th 1970, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. A model student and an exceptional athlete, Trevor was offered a scholarship to Princeton University to play for the hockey team. He decided to play for the Medicine Hat Tigers. He grew up watching the Medicine Hat Tigers. After one season of playing for the Medicine Midget Hat Tigers, Trevor joined the WHL Tigers. On April 15, 1988 the Vancouver Canucks drafted him second overall. And that was when he got the legendary number 16.

Trevor Linden has received many awards for his greatness on and off the ice. In the WHL and the CHL he has chosen to the WHL East Second All-Star team in 1988, the Memorial Cup also in 1988, and the Alumni Achievement Awards in 2009.  In the NHL he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1989, awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1997, and was the recipient of the NHL Foundation Player Award. He has also gotten the Order of Canada in 2010, and the Order of British Columbia in 2003.  He was the youngest captain in Canucks history, and one of only three people to get their jerseys retired by the Canucks.

Trevor Linden is a positive role model for anyone who wants to be in the NHL. He has helped many different people with his charity work, and made me like hockey. He got me to believe that anything is possible if you just try. If you want to play hockey you can, and if you want to do anything else, he just proves that it is possible. Trevor Linden is a hockey star, and even though he may not be the famous Gretzky, he is the best hockey player in my mind. That is why I chose Trevor Linden as my hero.
