Firefighters

by Bobby from Houston

In memory of the firefighters of 9-11.

People say that everyone has a hero, one most important person like Spiderman, Superman, Mom, or Dad. The person can be fictional or non-fictional. Well, there is more than one hero in my eyes and they do one heck of a good job in what they do. The people I chose are the firefighters in the US.

"On September 11, 2001, four commerical airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and in a field in Pennsylvania. Men and women from all over the United States helped with the rescue efforts" (ABC NEWS). Willing to put their lives at risk, they saved other people in a burning building, tree jumpers, etc. The day the terrorists attacked, firefighters sprang into action to see what they could do to save people in the burning buildings. Risking their lives, some firefighters died and will always be remembered for their brave actions. And some firefighters say they are not heroes.

A firefighter's quote: "I agree but we are not heroes. It's nice that people think that way."

People were suprised how much guts the firefighters had to run into a burning building that could collapse. People even thought they were crazy, but they had to do their jobs. From the MSNBC site, Jim Pensomen said, "The toughest part was watching the firemen go back into that building as it was coming down. That was something else. Those guys, I tell you, they have courage, knowing what they know."

"On September 11, we valued heroism because it was everywhere" (Nancy Gibbs, Time). American souls who were lost will never be forgotten by those who haven't forgotten the day the World Trade Center collapsed and fell and killed people who were right under it. People still write to those families who lost their loved ones in the World Trade Center.

"I am a 13 year old girl who is devastated by this tradgedy. Even though I have never met you, I will always remember you because I was touched by the words your wife said - A great man who enjoyed life and loved to sing. God bless you and your family."

God bless those souls.

September 11th will live on in the memories of the firefighters. Songs that were dedicated to the victims, such as Darryl Worley's "Have you Forgotten," were big hits. Kids around the world donated money and things to help people who lost their loved ones. People like Jason Crowe gave funds to those families who lost a loved one and Mattie Stepanek wrote a poem for those lost ones. Even I, a junior in high school, will never forget the day that terrorists went behind our lines and did that to people who hadn't done anything to them but try to make peace.
