Manners have their place.
We are taught to wait our turn,
to raise our small hands patiently.
We must take our elbows off the table
and never chew with our mouths open.
But sometimes,
when the world is pregnant with wrongs,
it is the gravest act of rudeness
to sit in demure silence.
What is called for
is a heroic yawp
so loud,
so disruptive,
that the world will
put down its newspapers,
stop buttering toast,
and actually pay attention
to the real loss of etiquette.
