Tony Gunawan

by Jason from Cedar Grove, New Jersey

Olympics Hero from Indonesia

As Bob Dylan once commented, “I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with freedom.” A hero can be anybody; they don’t have to be famous. A hero has to make a difference to people. A hero also has qualities like loyalty and courage. Tony Gunawan is a hero to many people in Indonesia for playing badminton.

Tony Gunawan was born in 1976 in Indonesia. He played badminton for 25 years. He won an Olympic gold medal in the men’s doubles in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Tony won the 2001 All England Open.

Tony Gunawan moved to the U.S. to make badminton a more popular sport. Tony commented, “I wanted more from my life than badminton.” He wants everybody to think badminton is just as competitive as any other sport. He wants many people to think badminton is not a backyard sport.

Tony Gunawan believes in himself, he’s a dreamer, and he is committed. He believes in himself and the ability to make badminton popular in the U.S. He’s committed because he never stops dreaming about giving up on the U.S. He’s a dreamer because he dreams of making badminton a more popular sport.

In summary, heroes are an inspiration. They make a difference to others. Tony Gunawan is a hero to many people including me. He is a hero to his country; he helped Indonesia win badminton championships. He is a great hero to many people who love the sport.
