I think a leader should have a lot of great characteristics. I believe that heroes should be leaders and also help other people. Heroes should be smart and know the best thing to do. George Washington is my hero because he was an important leader and he helped lead our country to become free from Great Britain. Heroes should always do the right thing and be nice to people, just like George Washington.

Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1732. He grew up in Virginia with his mother Mary Ball and father, Augustine. When he was 11, he went to live with his half-brother at Mt.Vernon. When he was young, he pursued military arts and Western expansion. He also liked the subject of mathematics. In 1752, he inherited the land his brother owned because he died. Washington was said to learn very quickly.

At the age of 22, he was a colonel lieutenant in the beginning of the French and Indian War. He was never badly injured even though four bullets were shot through his coat and two horses shot out from under him. He left the Army and went back home in 1758 and repaired his neglected property. Before the American Revolution, he managed his lands and was in the Virginia House of Burgesses. He got married to Martha Dandrige Custis in 1759. She was a widow with two young children. He didn’t like the British regulations and spoke of resistance. In May 1775, in Philadelphia, he was elected commander in chief of the Continental Army. In 1781, he forced the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Washington didn’t like the Articles of Confederation. So he was an outstanding helper leading to the Constitutional Convention. He was unanimously elected as the first president of the new country. He became interested in foreign policy. He also suggested that the U.S. stay neutral in foreign policy. George Washington helped lead the nation to become a free land and he still had a good life and family. Washington died on December 14 1799, of a throat infection at the age of 67.

George Washington was a very important person in my eyes. A good hero should know how to be a leader. George Washington led the Continental Army and led the nation as president for two terms. I also think a hero should be smart like he was, even though he didn’t have any college education and yet was still really smart. Heroes should also help other people and not just themselves. George helped a lot of people gain independence from Britain. He enlisted in the Army and fought for us. I think people should try a little bit to be like him and do good things for the people.
