Mariel Margaret Hamm

by Alisha from Hobart, Indiana

My hero is Mia Hamm, I chose her because I always wanted to be a professional soccer player like her. She's one of the most famous professional soccer players. She inspires girls all over the world. She has always inspired me to play soccer and always showed me you can do anything. She's been an excellent example for me to be active, healthy, and to have a good attitude.

Mia has won some and has lost some, but it's good to practice your mistakes over and over. Girls around the world follow her example. She's played all around the world. She has played in Canada, Germany, Italy, Hawaii and many more. She plays on the U.S. National team. She was named U.S. Soccer's female athlete of the year for three consecutive years from 1994-96.

She plays forward postion, weighs 125 lbs. and is 5'5". Born March 17, 1972 in Selma, Alabama, her hometown is Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she went to the University of North Carolina. She had gotten a great scholarship and a great education before going into professional soccer.

Mia Hamm has been the best woman soccer player for the U.S. She has won many trophies and medals. She has always played with teamwork. She has also played with girls from different countries on the same team. Her postion in soccer is the one who follows the ball all over the field and tries to get a goal. She also learned many awesome ways to get the ball in the goal.

She has to practice these goal-scoring moves over and over to make it right. Mia encourages girls to be healthy, strong, and learn different things about their chosen sport. She also shows us that a girl can do anything in sports. Girls can do any sport from soccer to football. She is my #1 hero for girls everywhere.
