Helen Keller

by Dorothy from Prishtina

One quality I think a hero should have is bravery. For example, when Ghandi was put into jail, the city complained to the government to let him out. Another quality is caring. Caring is important because you need to care for those in need. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. cared for black and white kids, both girls and boys wanted them to be together. “I have a dream.”One last quality a hero should have is peace. Peace is important because we are all together. No matter what our skin color is, or gender is, or religion is, we certainly can do big things. Those are three qualities I think a hero should possess.

Helen Keller was a deaf-blind American author and educator. She faced her challenges from being deaf-blind. This is important because she was still confident even though she was going to be deaf and blind for her whole life. She also became a famous author. This is important because she helped lots of little deaf-blind kids learn. She also met Alexander Graham Bell, creator of the telephone. This is important because he helped her learn and go to the Perkins School for the Blind.

Helen Keller was born on June 17, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She had a normal life until age six. She got very sick from scarlet fever. She became better, but it left her deaf and blind. This made things very hard for Helen. It was like she was trapped in a prison of darkness and silence. Her parents didn’t know that she was feeling trapped, so they just let her run around the house. Since she was deaf, she never learned to speak, so when she was tired or confused, she threw fits and tantrums. Helen’s parents felt bad for her, so they hired a woman named Annie Sullivan to help Helen. Next, Annie took her to the Perkins Institution for the Blind. Annie died on October twentieth, 1936. Helen died on June 1st, 1968.

The most important event or accomplishment in her life was getting her college degree as the first deaf-blind person to get a college degree. This is important because she helped deaf-blind kids learn.

One of the challenges Helen Keller faced was, at age six, she was overcome with a disease called scarlet fever. This left Helen deaf and blind. Helen could not hear or speak, but it did not stop her from achieving her dreams. Another challenge Helen faced was having behavior problems, like temper tantrums and horrible manners.

Helen Keller is a hero because of her disabilities. She was brave because no matter what people said about her not giving up, she didn’t. She was caring because she cared for all the little deaf-blind kids. She was peaceful because when everyone at the Perkins Institution noticed she was also deaf, she didn’t care. I think Helen Keller is a hero, and I hope you do too.
