My grandpa was born near Tillsonburg, Ontario. He moved to Calgary in 1951. He has two sisters and three brothers. They grew up on a farm. He got married in 1950 and he and my grandma, Becky, moved straight to Calgary. Once they moved to Calgary, he had his first child. He has been a resident of Calgary for over 50 years. When he first moved to this part of Alberta, there were only 125,000 people living here!
Although not as many people attended universities then as they do now, he realized the benefit of an education and he was accepted into Michigan State University. There, he got a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. He became a geologist. After that career, he bought out the Atlanta Flames NHL hockey team and brought them to Calgary because of his love of hockey. He currently still owns the ‘Calgary Flames.'
When he moved to Calgary, he moved to a house in the inner-city, then to a house beside the Rockyview Hospital which he lived in for a long time. During the last couple of years, he moved to a busy street in downtown Calgary.
My grandpa is my hero because of the calm way he handles all of his problems. He is very wise in all of the decisions he makes and he looks at everything from the other person's point of view. He always thinks things through very carefully.
Recently, he donated some money to help with research of the brain. The institute was named in honor of him. He hired some of Calgary's leading surgeons to study the brain. The institute is now working in the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
