Do you know who your nation’s hero is? Well, Jose Rizal is the national hero of the Philippines. Jose Rizal was from Laguna, Philippines and is a Chinese-Mestizos. He was born on June 19, 1861.

Jose Rizal’s family was wealthy, but he still suffered from discrimination because neither of his parents was born in the Philippines. He wrote two novels called Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

Jose Rizal eventually left the Philippines. He traveled alone to Madrid, Spain. There, he studied medicine in Universidad Central de Madrid. He also attended the University of Paris and earned the highest degree awarded by the University of Heidelberg. While he was there, he wrote the novel Noli me Tangere. On 1887 Jose Rizal went back to Philippines. There, he became the target of the police because of the publication of Noli me Tangere. Then he left for Spain, where he wrote his novels. He also wrote articles about Filipino nationalism. And he also became a doctor.

In 1892, Jose Rizal returned to the Philippines. He created La Liga Filipina, which was a political group that called for peaceful change in Philippines. The Spaniards didn’t like it, so they sent Jose Rizal to Mindanao. In 1896, Jose Rizal was arrested. He was convicted for rebelling against the Spanish government. On December 30, 1896 Jose Rizal was executed by the firing squad.

Jose Rizal was helpful, courageous, selfless, noble, resourceful, and faithful. Jose Rizal was helpful because he was helping not just himself, but everybody to have freedom and equality from the Spaniards. He was courageous because he had enough courage to fight against the Spaniards. He was selfless because he didn’t care what would happen to him while he was rebelling. He was noble because he wrote novels. He is resourceful because he made La Liga Filipina. And he was faithful because he always had faith in everything. He never gave up on fighting for Philippine rights and freedom.

Jose Rizal is my hero because he fought for Philippine rights and freedom. Even if he is dead, all Filipinos still have respect for him. His characteristics made him stand out. Now they have monuments and parks named after him. And they also made a holiday called Rizal Day, which is on December 30.
