Jeannie Mitchell: The Saving Never Stops

by DANIELA AVILA from United States

118674Jeannie Mitchellhttps://www.ridemcts.com/about-mcts/mcts-excellence/jeannie-mitchellJeannie Mitchell is a Milwaukee bus driver who didn't just save one person but three.

On October 12th, 2016, Mitchell contacted the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) dispatch when she found two young children walking alone; a one-year-old boy and five-year-old girl. She realized they were lost and keep them on board until police came and got a hold of their mom who said they walked away from their babysitter. They got lost going to their relative's house.

in 1991, Daniel Batson stated that altruism is a motivational state with the goal of increasing another's welfare. His Empathy-Altruism theory explains three factors that contribute to a genuine desire to help: One the observer has had similar experience, two the observer is attached to the victim, and three they are can imagine what it is like to be in the victim's position. This produces the altruistic motive to reduce the other person's distress.

According to Ride MCTS's article, "Jeannie says she knows all too well how scary it can be to have a child missing. Nearly 25 years ago, her then 5-year-old son left a relative’s house and was missing for nearly 12 hours until a stranger helped bring him home. She says she is happy she was able to help another mom avoid going through that same thing."

With Precious Bolden, a new driver, they came across a stopped vehicle in the road. Bolden pulled over as Mitchell checked on the slumped over man inside his vehicle. He was unconscious. Mitchell said,"I knocked on the window and I checked the doors. The passenger door was locked. The driver door was open, his foot was still on the brake but the car was still running,"

Bolden used the bus' radio to call dispatch and request medical help. Paramedics found drugs in his system. Their quick thinking prevented any injuries to the man and other drivers in the road.
