Roy Keane

by Soma from Toronto, Canada

Roy Keane is a professional soccer player. He was born in Cork, Ireland, 1971. He is the manager of Sunderland in England's Coca-Cola Championship league. He is a former Irish international footballer, Irish team captain, Manchester United team captain and Celtic player. During his childhood, most coaches and scouts thought he would be too small to make any good professional teams. He finally had a tryout at Nottingham Forest, an English division 1 team. After a lot of hard work, he was accepted. He would soon start for the team and start his illustrious career.

In 1993, Manchester United bought him from Nottingham Forest for a record (at the time) of 3.75 Million pounds. He was off to a quick start and a few years later became captain of the best team in the Premiership. Roy Keane became a controversial star, being given red cards and suspensions quite frequently throughout his inaugural seasons. Either you loved him, or you hated him.

Manchester United would go on to win several league titles in a row, and also winning the FA Cup and also the Champions League in 1998. Roy Keane was a great leader and a very influential figure. He is my hero because he overcame adversity and hardships as an adolescent. He proved everyone wrong and became one of the best players of all time and was also selected as one of the “FIFA 100”, a group of players chosen by Pele as the best in the world… ever.
