The Kiss
by Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862 - 1918)
Painting
Perhaps Gustav Klimt's most famous painting, The Kiss was a product of his "Golden Phase", where many of his works were embossed with gold leaf. The son of a gold engraver, Klimt became well known not just for the beauty of the subjects he immortalized, but for the ornamentation found in his work. Heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style popularized from 1890 - 1910, Klimt decorated many of his paintings with designs more commonly found in textiles, ceramics, jewelry and religious icons.
