Dutch Interior (III)
by Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983)
Painting
This painting is one of three that Miro painted in 1928. All three are interpretations of Dutch postcards that he collected during a trip to Holland; reproductions of the works of two of Joan Miro's heroes, Dutch artists Hendrik Martenszoon Sorgh and Jan Steen. Working from the postcards he'd gathered, Miro took the subject matter and distorted it until the original piece was unrecognizable save for the few details he left intact. In the painting above, an archer has been twisted into a purely abstract form while the arrows and the birds the archer is hunting are still vaguely representative of the original piece.
