Throughout much of his adult life, Van Gogh was an avid letter writer, and wrote to his brother Theo, an art dealer and Vincent's benefactor, many times. When he wrote Theo from the asylum at St. Remy in 1889, he described the above canvas: "I have a canvas of cypresses with a few ears of wheat, poppies, a blue sky, which is like a multicolored Scotch plaid." He would go on to paint two more variations of it in oil.
