David Levitt |
David Levitt is my hero! He’s also the hero of hundreds of homeless people. He is only 14 years of age, but that didn’t stop him from making a difference. He lives in Florida and he has made people there feel good inside. David is my hero.
Levitt wondered why all the leftover cafeteria food couldn’t go to the homeless and poor. So, on his 12th birthday, he went in front of the school board and proposed his idea of donating that food. They approved his idea and got over one hundred schools in Pinellas County to donate over 234,000 pounds of food every two years. At his bar Mitzvah, his guests donated over 500 pounds of food. Gladlock also took part and donated sealed bags for storage.
Restaurant owners and hosts of private parties contributed their leftover food also. It’s amazing that when the program started, ten schools gave up food, but, today, over 100 schools are donating enough food for every hungry person in the USA. It’s also pretty astonishing that a 14-year-old could make such a difference to thousands and thousands of people.
To gain respect and to get all of the needed food and supplies, Levitt had to work hard and do the best job possible. Even tons of willing adults probably couldn’t do the job that he did. Luckily, he got people to help him achieve his dream along the way. He got his family, the school board, 100 different schools, hosts, restaurant owners, Gladlock, and feeding agencies to help.
David Levitt is important to me because he fed the hungry. He wanted to make a difference in the world, and that is exactly what he did. He means a lot to me because he made what other people thought impossible become a reality. The best part about this is that thousands of people living on the streets will not starve and die because he made his dream come true. He has also made a difference in my life because now I am inspired to do something just like that for others.
