My Lifelong Hero

by Annie from Nebraska

Hero is a powerful word. Not just anyone can be a hero, but then again, more people are heroes than we think. My mom, Connie, is my hero. She didn’t save someone’s life, or overcome a deathly disease. To me, though, that doesn’t make her any less heroic. My mom could be categorized as an undercover hero. She has many heroic qualities that sometimes I take for granted.

Everyday she makes the house SPIC and SPAN. She makes our lunches for school, and drives us to any activities we might have. My mom is always there for me on the sidelines of all of my volleyball, soccer, and basketball games, cheering me on. She is my major support system. When I ask for supplies for a project, she gets them for me. I can count on her because she is so dependable and trustworthy. Because she is dependable and trustworthy, I want to be too!

My mom is a very religious person, and my family goes to mass every weekend. I admire that about her--how she is so willing to do God’s will. That quality of dedication to God affects my life everyday by making me a better person. Also, my mom knows right from wrong, another heroic quality. All my life she has taught me that and now I have a better ability to distinguish right from wrong.

My mom does so much for my family and me. She does the cooking, cleaning, and most important, she just loves me. She’s brave, brave to take on the challenge of raising a family of four kids. My mom is always supporting me and my siblings in all the undertakings of our day-to-day lives. Without her I would be a different person. Her qualities of trustworthiness, loyalty, lovingness, knowing right from wrong, and being a good role model are qualities that affect me. They make me stronger and, if I get lucky, sometimes those qualities rub off on me.

Hero may be a powerful word used only to describe some really special people, but in my opinion hero is a title my mom deserves to have. Thanks mom, for being someone that I can always look up to, an excellent mom, and most important of all, my hero.
