Abraham Lincoln

by Barbara from New York

It was not hard to pick who to do a biography about: Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln started a war to keep America together when many people around him thought it was a bad idea and even impossible to do. Lincoln didn’t listen, though, and finished what he started. Abraham Lincoln has a holiday named after him on his birthday.

Lincoln went through many challenges in his life. Lincoln’s family was very poor and he spent most of his childhood trying to help them out. It was because of this that he only went to school for three years. This didn’t stop him, though, because after becoming a Captain of the Army in the Black Hawk War of 1832, he became a successful lawyer.

Abraham Lincoln faced many challenges both before and after becoming president. Due to the fact that his family was poor, he wasn’t given many chances early in life. People from Illinois did not like the way he looked and talked, and he lost all of the elections he ran in before becoming President of the United States. When he was elected President, many slave states were upset that he won because he was against slavery, so they seceded from the Union. When Lincoln declared war, many people in the North thought that he shouldn’t have. Through all of these challenges, big and small, Lincoln came through, and it was his ability to persevere that really helped make him what he was.

The biggest obstacle Lincoln had to face was in his childhood. You see, his family was very poor and every cent he made went to them. Sometimes, instead of money, Abe asked for a book or books to read. Another thing he had to go through was when his mother died. Eventually, he had a nice stepmother, but he still missed his mom. Those are very hard things to go through as a child. Three things that best describe Lincoln are the following: Abraham is someone poor people look up to because he went from having nothing to becoming President of the United States of America, in spite of a lot of problems and challenges along the way. He was honest. He showed his honesty by walking twelve miles to give a woman her change because she gave him too much money. He was caring, because when Mary was busy, he took time out of his busy schedule to watch the children. Those are three characteristics that best describe him.

One of the biggest contributions Lincoln made to society was that he kept the United States of America united. Also, he gave speeches to help influence people to do the right thing. Those are two of the many contributions Lincoln made to society.

The definition of a hero is someone who has courage or the ability to do something. Lincoln started a war to keep America together when many people around him thought it was a bad idea or even impossible to do. Therefore, that shows that Abraham Lincoln is a hero.
