Maurice Richard was an amazing person. He displayed a great amount of courage, heart, and determination. He is my hero and should be everyone’s hero.
Maurice Richard was born August 4, 1921. He was one of eight children. As he grew up, he was just one of those kids that was good at everything. The more speed and power a sport required, the better he was at it. He only knew French because he lived in the French Canadian town of Montreal, Canada. He didn’t pick up English until he was in the National Hockey League (NHL). And he was later ridiculed for it.
Eventually, he decided to stick with hockey. The Montreal Canadians were desperate for players not in the army. So Maurice made the team. The first couple seasons he did okay. People ridiculed him because of his French Canadian background. Soon though, he had a breakout season. That season he was nicknamed Rocket because of his explosive speed. They won many Stanly Cups while he was with them, the championship of the NHL. But his best moments came from his most famous season. This season he was the first player in history to score fifty goals in fifty games. During that season he had eight points in one game, a record that stood until 1976.
The coolest thing that happened was during the Stanley Cup in 1952. Maurice and his team were in a tight matchup. And since the series is the best out of seven games, they were tied with three games each. At the start of the game he collided with another player and left the ice. But he then came back to score an amazing, awesome series winning goal! “I heard the crowd yell and by that time I was to dizzy to even see." The next season he was suspended unfairly and caused riots in the street.
Maurice Richard has had a big inspirational effect on me. If I’m in a tough spot in a game, or life, I think of Maurice Richard and how he kept persevering no matter what. “He was one of the greatest players in hockey’s history. He was a man who had a lot of respect for the hockey world,” said hockey great Mario Lemuix. He always keeps me going, just my thought of him.He was a great person who deserved more than what he had.
He was poor in the beginning. Although he enjoyed being a celebrity later in life, he deserved way more. He displayed courage, heart, and determination. That is my hero Maurice Richard.
