Michael Oher

by Dylan from Bayport, New York in United States

Michael Oher was born May 28, 1986, in a poor neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee. His original family was very supportive. They stuck together and had plans to get away from the people who were putting the family in foster homes. Michael’s new family was supportive too. They helped him to get into college and into the NFL. Michael liked to play with S.J. a lot too.

Michael Oher liked to play sports with his brothers, even though he was young. When he got older, he got a lot of fouls in basketball because of his size. One day Michael’s mom showed the refs that Michael wasn’t fouling and the refs didn’t call fouls on him as much. Michael Oher is very athletic. Even though he was very big for his age, he was still fast. He was also a good pitcher in baseball, even though he doesn’t look like he would be a pitcher. He was also good at basketball. He wanted to go to college for basketball, but then realized that he was very good at football.

Michael Oher had problems in school. He was not dumb, but every time he moved to a different home, he had to change schools. Because he moved so much he couldn’t learn the material as well, so he decided to just cut class. Eventually, when he was older, he settled on one school because his friend was going there. Because he only went to one school, he didn’t cut class, and he got better grades in school.

A lot of people consider Michael Oher as a hero. He is a hero because he started in a poor neighborhood and in foster care and became a professional football player. “I’ve never struggled with the question of whether I could succeed; I only struggled with how” (Oher 129). He showed people that no matter how bad your background is, you can still complete your goals in life. Even after missing a lot of classes when he was young, he still got good grades in college. He tried so hard to get his GPA high enough to go to college, and in college, he did very well.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, but got traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2014. He started 11 games but got a toe injury near the end of the season. Then, he got released and got signed by the Carolina Panthers, which is where he is now.
