Yao Ming

Yao : A life in two worlds

Nowadays, in our society, more and more people are looking to role models for guidance in developing their characters. In my opinion, a true role model is someone who possesses the qualities that we would like to have and someone who has affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people, just like Yao Ming who serves as a role model to me.

Actually, I’m not a real basketball fan, but after having read dozens of articles which have been written about him, I began to know Yao and also be influenced by him---the first chinese basketball player in the NBA.

Although he is just a rookie in the NBA, (as of May, 2006) Yao has become a household name. People crowd the lines to get tickets to his games. His name and picture are strewn all over the news. A soft-spoken, humorous, hard-working young man has discovered his place in the world in his second hometown, Houston. Yao Ming is much more than a magnificent basketball player, he is an explorer and a pioneer.

I admire him for his bravery and his passion for life. His dream was the seed of his success. Yao is a dreamer. He uses his vitality and passion to meet the difficulties in his life. Reminiscing about his childhood dream, he says “I wanted to be an adventurer and explore the world!” His stellar basketball moves have allowed him to begin accomplishing his childhood dream. After getting over many frustrations at the beginning of his career in the NBA, Yao has become one of the most exciting rookies in NBA history. He scored an average of 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.74 blocks per game, earning him unanimous NBA All-Rookie First Team honors.

Anyway, from Yao Ming, who is the embodiment of “Energy, Passion, Champion and Soul”, I learned a lot. His experiences encourage me to think and use the power of my voice and the strength of my fist. It is his behavior that I look up to, and at the same time, I will try my best to improve my character.
