My Grandma, My Hero

by Makenna Batchelor from Charlotte, NC

Mama -- my hero, who doesn't even know she is one. She’s been everything: a true hero is and then some. All 25,000 days of her life, she has tried to do something to make a difference in someone else’s life. My grandma might not have the powers of a super hero, but she is just as heroic as one. A hero is not just someone you would see in a Marvel or DC movie. To me a true hero shows undying faithfulness, unconditional love, and honest selflessness. Cape or no cape, my mama shows these heroic qualities.

In any situation, I can always count on my grandma to show undying faithfulness. An example of this is that she is eminently knowledgeable of the Bible and continues to read it every day. My family and I will ask her questions about the Bible, and she can answer them in a flash. If she has trouble answering them, she will study and answer them the next time we see her. Another example of my grandma being faithful is when she was fifty five years old, she had to quit her job as a dental hygienist, which she had enjoyed for so many years. She didn't want to quit, but God had a different purpose for her to fulfill in her lifetime. She would kneel by her bedside late at night and whisper to God for the slightest faith of a mustard seed. So, God gave her the ability to trust that he was holding her tightly and wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. My final example of this is that she has led various groups and taught manifold classes at her church. She was the women’s ministry leader for over 20 years and received a recognition award for the huge impact she made at the church. She also taught in different Sunday school classes for over 30 years and has impacted children’s lives at her church. To conclude, she has made a huge difference in many different places all because she trusted in God and never questioned the work He was doing in her life.

My grandma shows her love for God and others through her faithfulness in Christ. Love is being there when someone needs you most. Love is dropping everything that is going on in your life to go help someone else in their time of need. Love is taking time out of your day and spending time with others. My grandma shows unconditional love to those she knows and those she doesn't know, and to those she sees and doesn't see. When my sister and I were younger, we would go to my grandparents' house, and my grandma would take hours to teach us to sew. We did this many times. Other times, it would be baking or cooking. No matter the occasion, she showed love. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” She strives to show everyone the same love that God shows her.

Selfless -- what an exemplary word to describe my grandma. Always doing things for others, never thinking about herself. An example of this would be that my grandma drives the church bus if needed, so that others at her church don't have to drive. She doesn't want to do this, but she feels called to do this by God. My grandma also received an award at her church for all the time she gave leading the women’s ministry, and she is still helping lead it. As I previously said, she served as the leader for over 30 years. One last example of this is when she came over to our house when she wasn't planning on it because something came up. She gives up so much of her time to encourage others.

My grandma helps and inspires me and others through God. God has given her all of these amazing heroic qualities: infinite love and obedience for God, wholehearted love, and genuine selflessness. She has chosen to use God’s gifts in an outstanding way. She inspires others to use their gifts to help others as well. She tries to live her life to the glory of God. I admire her for her true faithfulness and genuine love for others. She loves me unconditionally. She is a role model I can always count on being able to trust and follow her. She is my hero.
