My Grandmother

by Catherine Sholter from Charlotte, NC

My grandmother often says, “Be proud of who you are and who you came from.” My grandmother is trying to teach me to not change who I am for someone else, but to be proud of who I am and who I came from (my family). My Geggy was raised in Montgomery, Alabama, during the time of segregation and the bus boycott. She has faced many challenges in life and has had many successes as well.  What is a hero? A hero is someone who demonstrates being caring, loving, and selfless.

My grandmother has many traits, but the one that stands out the most is how loving she is. One example of this is her ability to be there for me and know when I need her the most. As a former principal, she has gotten the opportunity to work with kids and got to help them become better in their education! Also, she always says to me, “We’re so bonded.”  This shows how much she loves me and how much we connect with each other. In conclusion, my grandmother ever since she was a little girl is a loving person.

Secondly, she is a very caring person. For example, the other day she baked a whole pound cake for the pharmacy just because she felt thankful for them and all they do for her and my grandfather. Another example is, one day after school I was tired and nervous about what I got on a test, she decided to take me to Smoothie King. Also, any time that I am sick, she always comes after and lays with me, even though I’m contagious and she could possibly get sick too. My grandmother does many things to show how caring and I could go on and on all day about how warm hearted she is!!!

My grandmother has always been selfless her whole life. My great grandfather has told me stories about when she was a little girl and how she always put others before herself. For example, her sister, Phyllis, didn’t get a piece of candy at church one day and she decided to give her piece of candy to her! When we were at the annual family beach trip two years ago, she didn’t like Mexican food but she still ate the Mexican food and went to the restaurant because everyone else in the family wanted to go there as well. Also, anytime that I was sick and my parents couldn’t take off of work, she dropped everything that she had planned that week and took a flight to Charlotte and stayed with me for the week and took care of me! I admire her for this because of all she has done for me and my family throughout my lifespan.

If I had to describe my grandmother in one word, it would be amiable. She has not only been the person I look up to, but she is the person that has helped me become the person that I am today! She encourages me and gives me confidence and supports me when I need it. Her spiritual heart is also something that helped me through the rough times. If it wasn’t for her in my life I don’t know who I would be and what my life would be like. My grandmother is hero in my life and I’m very thankful for that!
