My Hero

by David Greig from Charlotte, NC

“For every step you take in your life, remember, I’m right behind you, always there with you.” Those words show my exact definition of a hero, and Coach Rose does all those things. Coach Rose is more than the normal coach who just wants to win and that is all. Coach cares about his team members, striving to make them better basketball players and better people. Coach Rose is my hero because he is always there for you, always cares for you, and always wants to make you better.

Coach Rose will always be there for others, no matter what the circumstance is. First of all, during the middle of the season, after a game, he had to drive all the way to New York to get his father because he was not doing well. That next morning, we had a practice and he was there with his dad, ready to coach. He did not care if he did not get sleep. He was going to be there to coach us. Second of all, a week after his dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he found out his stepson was in a coma. That did not affect him coming to every practice and every game. Even if his car wrecked an hour away from the game, he would walk all the way there to get to the game. Lastly, The day of the championship game, he had the flu and his stepson was about to die. He came to the game, and he had the same personality as usual: he did not show his sadness or that he was sick. Through his actions, Coach Rose showed us that he really was always going to be there for us no matter what happens.

This coach is not like any other coach. He will always care for you, It does not matter if you are injured, just had a bad day, or just having a rough game or practice. Coach Rose cares about everybody- not just the best players. First, he tries to get everybody in the game. After a game when not everybody gets to play, he always apologizes and says, I will get you in next game. He does this because he wants everybody to get the experience of being on a team and playing. Second, he gave everybody the opportunity to start a game this year. I know he would feel like it was not an accomplished season if everybody did not start because after every game he would ask who has started this season. Third, during the season a player felt like they were not getting enough playing time. So he asked coach if he could get some more playing time, then the next game that player started the game. Coach Rose made this person's season by doing that. That probably meant the world to them. Coach Rose will always do the right thing for you to make you happy.

He  always wants to make you better, not just at basketball, but at just being a better person. In the first place, he will never get on you in a negative way. If he gets on you, it is to make you better but he will not be screaming at you. He will be explaining what you did wrong, and what you could do to get it right. He does not want to get on you and you be upset that you got it wrong, he wants to get on you and then you get it right and be happy. In addition, every Saturday morning practice he would sit us down and tell us stories and there would always be a moral at the end. Every Saturday he would tell us a different story and there would be a different moral. He wanted us to become better people and just live the right way. He never wanted us to get hurt or hurt others so he told us these stories. Last but not least, on Sunday he takes time out of his day to train with people at basketball to make them better. He does this for free, he takes out of his day to help other people. That is a true servant's heart. Coach Rose will always be trying to make you better. It doesn't matter whether it is basketball or just wanting to make you a better person.

He has inspired me to care for others more and pray a lot more. He has showed me what it is like to have a true hero and mentor in my life. Coach Rose has always been there for me when I need him in tough times. At the end of practice he would always give you that word of encouragement that brightened your day. But most importantly he has improved my relationship with Christ. He has prayed for me whenever I have asked for it. He has never left any of our sides. Literally he never missed a practice or game. Even though his son was dying and his dad was not doing very well. If I see Coach Rose again I just want to tell him thank you for being the biggest hero in my life. I know that he will not be my coach forever but he will be my hero forever. Coach Rose has been there when I needed him, always cared for me, and has always tried to make me a better person.
