My twin, my hero

by spela from Slovenia

Who is a hero? For me hero is someone, who makes people happy, even if they are just strangers. True hero is someone who helps others. Someone who overcomes every obstacle in life and prove people that everything is possible. Hero is someone who isn't selfish. His or hers characteristics are: brave, strong, kind, clever, good-hearted ... And which person is my hero? My hero is my twin sister Ana.

Ana is 15 years old today. Ana was very sympathetic kid. She has always been very kind. Ana has never been slim, but she has not been fat neither. As a kid Ana ate a lot, whenever you offered her food she took it. She has never been into sports really, but that has changed in 4th grade, when she has begun practicing volleyball. But the fact she did sport did not change her appearance, she was still chubby. Do not get me wrong she has never been fat, but I have always been slimmer than her.

121593This is the drawing of Ana, when she was hospitalized.spelaEverything has changed in her 6th grade, when Ana was diagnosed with diabetes type 1. It is not same as diabetes type 2, which is consequence of obesity. Diabetes type 1 is chronic illness, which affects on producing insulin in your body. When your body does not produce enough insulin your sugar level in blood rise, so you have to receive insulin by shots. When Ana got sick she lost a lot of weigh. I was scared for her, because I did not know anything about diabetes. I have helped Ana with her shots. Her illness also meant she had to change her eating habits. But the illness did not stop her from anything. Ana has continue with volleyball practices, during the summer she ran every day.

Now Ana is living almost like any other teenager. Ana has shoved me that everything is possible. Nothing in this world is strong enough to stop you from your dreams coming true. I learnt a lot from Ana's illness. Ana is my twin and Ana is my hero.
