Myself

by Tanvi Mehto from Vaishali, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh in India

I am my hero.

Why? Is it not possible? With the course of history and ages that I know of, I have saved myself more than anyone could ever do. Albeit putting myself in situations not favorable, I emerged- like a lone wolf, yet a leader to my course of destiny.

Go back and ask—the little girl from six years ago—about her desires. The answer won’t waver. She’d look you in the eyes, her gaze unwavering, and say, “Yes, I am certain I’ll be there.” The gleam in her eyes might dim slightly, an ambiguity lurking within her fragile shell, but her smile would persist. For she knows that the journey isn’t just about reaching the mountaintop; it’s about becoming more confident, more resilient, and a better human along the way. And so, with each step forward, she weaves her story—a tapestry of courage, vulnerability, and unwavering determination. The winds may howl, the path may twist, but she walks on. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s necessary. Because the summit isn’t merely a destination; it’s a testament to her spirit.  And as I promised myself, the girl back then- Yes, she’ll be there. Not as a mere conqueror of peaks, but as a soul who dared to dream, who dared to believe that the climb was worth every stumble, every scar. And when she stands atop that metaphorical Everest, she won’t just gaze at the world below; she’ll look inward, recognizing the strength that carried her there.

With everything in myself, I will go on. Not merely for my own sake, but for the intricate web of society that envelops me. For without them, how would I even exist?  Let me take you back to that moment—the little girl standing by the pond. Her reflection dances on the water’s surface, a shimmering echo of her innocence. She smiles, waves, and her shadow mirrors the gesture. But beneath that serene facade, a tempest brews—a question that reverberates through time and space. Odds are against mine, dear world,” she whispers, her voice swallowed by the ripples. “Am I not fit enough for the society that my parents fear? The tasks, the trials—boys my age embrace them, yet I am held back. Is it fear that grips their hearts, or is there a hidden meaning behind their resolute ‘NO’?”

The society, like a stern guardian, draws boundaries around her dreams. “Stay within the lines,” it admonishes. “Don’t stray too far.” But what if the lines are too narrow? What if her spirit yearns for expanses beyond the familiar?  Is it fear that grips their hearts?” she wonders. “Fear of what I might become? Fear that my wings will eclipse their own? Or is it something deeper—a thread woven into the fabric of generations? An ancient pact that binds us all? The answer eludes her, slipping through her fingers like water. But she persists. She gathers courage—the kind that blooms in defiance. Yet, she dares to question. “What if my place is not within the lines? What if my purpose lies beyond the prescribed path?” Her heart rebels—an insurgent against the status quo. And as she stands there, her reflection rippling, she glimpses a truth: The greatest revolutions begin within. Dear world,” she declares, her voice trembling yet resolute. “I am more than the sum of your expectations. I am the fire that burns in forgotten corners, the melody that defies silence. And if my steps falter, if my dreams collide with your walls, so be it. For I am not here to fit—I am here to expand.

So, my friend, when doubt whispers in your ear, remember that little girl—the one who defied odds, who painted her dreams on the canvas of possibility. She’s still within you, urging you forward. And as you ascend, know this: You are both the climber and the mountain. And as you stand by your own metaphorical pond, remember that you carry the echoes of that little girl within you. She is both your compass and your rebellion. And when society’s ‘NO’ reverberates, know this: You are not alone. You are the question mark that challenges the sentence.
