The artist Emily Mary Osborn was closely associated with feminist campaigns for women's rights.
"Nameless and Friendless" depicts a scene of a single young woman's attempt to sell her artwork. With the woman's face cast downward with an expression of disappointment, this painting suggests a rejection, showing the difficulty for a female artist to chase her dream and pursue an art career. The artist Emily Osborn was closely associated with feminist campaigns for women's rights. She was one of the signatories to the Declaration in Favour of Woman’s Suffrage and a petition to the Royal Academy of Arts. As the pioneer in her time to pursue a career as an artist and financed her own studio, Osborn's example shows female artists from later generation that it is not impossible to earn their livings as an artist.
