Established in 1992, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is dedicated to concrete activities to end extreme poverty. Ending poverty and hunger are the top two UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
The first observance was held on October 17, 1987 when 100,000 people protested at the site of the signing of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and came together to show their solidarity with the poor. The observance continues to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. and to work to guarantee these human rights are respected.
- Poverty is not just lack of income, but often entails hunger, malnutrition, lack of access to education and basic services.
- Almost 800 million people live below the international poverty line of US$1.90 a day
- 1 in 9 people today are malnourished
- Over 3 million children under 5 die of malnutrition each year
