Phillis Wheatley accomplished something no other other African woman had done; she was the first African American woman and slave to publish a book of poems. I admire and respect her for being an African American female poet and pioneer during the American Revolution. Despite facing huge challenges, she persevered to complete her work, spoke out through her poetry, and continues to inspire many people to this day. I had started sketching my drawing and stumbled onto the book cover of "A Voice of My Own," a book about Phillis Wheatley. It resembled the image I had in mind, so I used it as a reference. I worked on the drawing on and off for about two weeks to finish it.
