When people think of great defensemen, they think of the new players like Chris Pronger, Al McInnis and Dion Phaneuf. But most people forget about some of the greats like Bobby Orr, Tim Horton and of course, Denis Potvin!
Denis Potvin was born on October 29th, 1953, in an area of Ottawa, Ontario called Overbrook. Denis had two older brothers named Robert (oldest) and Jean (middle) who eventually became a teammate! As the youngest brother, Denis followed in their footsteps. When they learned to backward skate, he did too, because he was younger and he was eager.
Denis Potvin set a number of records. These are a few: he set the New York Islanders record for the most points by a defenseman and he played in the Allstar Game 5 years in a row. He won 4 trophies: the Calder Trophy, the Stanley Cup, the Challenge Cup and the Canada Cup. He was voted the Hockey News Rookie of the Year.
Denis Potvin was helpful to the community. He was always a good sport, even when other players targeted him because he was good and they tried to get him off his game. Denis Potvin was a hero for many people and a leader for others. I chose Denis Potvin because he helps people and was a great hockey Player. Thank you for taking the time to read my report. I hope you enjoyed it.
