Robert Jordan, or "James Oliver Rigney Jr.," was the author of the beloved fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.” He was born on October 17, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina and died on September 16, 2007, due to a disease called amyloidosis. Robert Jordan is a hero for serving his country, writing such a great series, and making sure that even without him his series would be completed.
Robert Jordan served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter gunner. This makes him a hero because he chose to serve his country not once but twice, and I personally believe that all soldiers are heroes. During his tours he earned the flying cross with bronze oak leaf cluster, and several other distinguished medals.
Robert Jordan learned to read at a very young age and is reported to have been reading Mark Twain and Jules Vern by the age of five. He wrote many different novels under different pseudonyms, but is most renowned as Robert Jordan for writing “The Wheel of Time.” When he died in 2007, he left the series incomplete, but he left enough notes for Brandon Sanderson, with the help of Robert Jordan’s wife, to complete the last three books of the fourteen-book epic.
He is my personal hero because “The Wheel of Time” is undoubtedly one of the best fantasy series ever written, with complex dynamic characters, an interesting magic system, and amazing world-building. I loved reading the entire series, and near the end where Rand and Shai’tan were showing possibilities of what the world could look like, it was one of the greatest scenes I’ve ever read and the message behind it has really stuck with me since then.
That is why Robert Jordan is a hero. He served his country well, wrote a great series, and made a fantasy series which has made me view the necessity for good and evil in us all. I think that "The Wheel of Time" holds a special place in the hearts of all those who read this magnificent story.
