Jackie Robinson

by Jesse from Orem, Utah

The guy I picked was Jackie Robinson. He was born January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. His parents were Mallie and Jerry Robinson, after Jackie was born his dad left the family, so Jackie's mom raised him and three other kids. In high school he first played football, he was discovered by his principal when he saw him running, then he also played in baseball and ran track. He went to UCLA and was the first person to letter in four different sports, then was the only African American to play in the MLB. He was a great hero because he broke the color barrier in the MLB and he enlisted into the army and also was the first African American to make the Hall of Fame. When he got older he started to get heart problems and he died of a heart attack on October 24,1972 at the age of 53. What he has taught me is that regardless of color or any differences that a person might have, you can do anything. It does not matter that you are different. We are all the same inside.
