Wilma was born in Clarksville, Tennessee. She liked to run or jump instead of walk. Before she turned five she got a sickness called polio. She suffered much pain in her young life. She almost died getting polio.

Her mom was a maid and her dad was a railroad porter. Her left leg became crippled. She watched her brothers and sisters go to school. She almost died getting polio.

When Wilma was home her family helped her leg. She started to race.

She won 3 gold medals. She was the fastest woman in the world. She spoke to Jackie Robinson. She was the Olympic Champion. She died of brain cancer in 1994.
