The Dog Hero Of World War 1
Here is a story about a little dog's life, Sergeant Stubby. Sergeant Stubby is a hero to me because he never backed down. He went on lots of adventures and here is his story.
The year was 1917 little did anyone know one of the greatest soldiers of all time was about to join the army. A little stray dog walked up to a training field at Yale University in New Haven Connecticut, he easily became friends with the soldiers but his favorite one was Robert Conroy of the Yankee division. They quickly became best friends and almost never left each other's side.
Stubby was eventually snuck to France by his friend and helped hurt soldiers. Stubby went through a lot when he was in France; he was caught in a cloud of poison gas and even had to get a custom-made gas mask! After that, he was able to smell the gas and lead the soldiers away from it. Stubby was also hit by a German grenade right in the leg, and he still never gave up! He participated in 17 battles and 4 offenses.
Stubby got his rank by catching a German spy; the spy was speaking German which was pretty dumb so he caught the spy and went to get someone. Catching a spy is pretty impressive for a dog and that's how he got the rank of sergeant. He was also called the most decorated dog because he had so many medals.
He died on March 16 1926 at the age of 9 or 10. The interesting thing about him was that no one knew what kind of dog he was, but he was probably a Boston Terrier and Bull Terrier mutt. Stubby's story inspires me to never give up, and always take on a challenge!
