In the past there was little information about Black's in American history. Dr Sims decided to fill the void by writing a series of colorful books about African-American inventors for young children. Inventors were selected to highlight because for young children (preschool - 3rd grade) what was readily visible the stop light, shoes, gas mask and the refining of sugar, was easily remembered. She has also written Teacher's Guides for each book to give greater insight into how to present the books in extended ways across the curriculum.
