Terry fox lived for freedom!

Terry Fox

by Evelyn Antosko from Edmonton, Canada

MY Hero is Terrance Stanley Fox (Terry Fox). Terry Fox was born July 28th 1958, he died June 28th 1981. Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having to be amputated, he embarked on an east to west cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age 22. Now people all around Canada run to neighborhoods to collect money for cancer research.Terry Fox is my hero because he used his life to make the world a better place for people with cancer so he raised $24.17 million for cancer researchers. Terry Fox is important to me because if he did not do it other people would be suffering in hospitals because of cancer. Stop and think what would have happened without Terry Fox? What would kids feel? Do the kids feel happy or do they feel weak, not strong? The cancer researchers search and search to find a cure for cancer so Terry Fox ran for something, not nothing.Terry Fox is my hero - is he your hero?
