The Boating Party
by Mary Cassatt (1844 - 1926)
Painting
The Boating Party, created in the winter of 1893/94 in the south of France represents Cassatt's finest period.
The composition, like many of Cassatt's best paintings is arresting and unconventional. The sail, the oar and the boat's bow all point to the head of the child who, in typical Cassatt fashion, sprawls naturally in its mother's lap.
Some of Cassatt's favorite influences are boldly celebrated in the subject matter (Edouard Manet) and the color scheme (Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh).
Though Cassatt never had children of her own, she became most well-known for her touching portraits of mothers with their children.
