Ian James Thorpe

by Cristina from Tampico, Mexico

For myself, losing is not coming second. It's getting out of the water knowing you could have done better. For myself, I have won every race I've been in.

Ian is an Olympic medalist that has a lot of values like gentleness. For many people he could be a very competitive person that wins a lot of Olympic medals and makes a lot of money with them. He has handled his fame well. He doesn’t takes drugs or do bad things like that.

Even though he was allergic to chlorine, people helped him by making pools with substances other than chlorine. He also created a foundation for youth, Ian Thorpe’s Fountain for Youth, where he helps young people with few resources.

Swimming wasn’t a very popular sport, but because of all of the media attention Ian has gotten, kids with limited resources have been practicing swimming more often. Now, more and more, people want to swim. Ian is also a very good role model for us.

Even though he's had a short career as a swimmer, he has achieved a lot of his goals and his family’s goals like breaking 22 world records and a lot of things that common people don’t do but can do. He isn’t just wasting his life away, he is going out there and making his dreams come true. He makes me want to achieve my goals, even difficult ones, by watching how he helps other people.
